Carol Rhodes sent us these 2 wonderful pictures she took exploring the Erewash, although I suspect the Blue Tit was caught on bait, I'm sure you'll agree what lovely pics they are, especially the Robin.  Most winter anglers have noticed the Robin following them along their way, hoping for a free fishermans meal of maggot, worm or bread, and I often happily oblige and share my lunch.  The Erewash Robin is second to no red breast that I have seen anywhere and below is the proof.

Brown trout in the erewash

I have walked the Bennerley marsh area of the erewash for more than 20 years now and have never so much as 'glimpst' a stickle back. Today however, I have to report my very first sighting of sizeable trout comparable with those you can see over the pedestrian bridge at Bakewell. Absolutely astonished and very pleased, as I had assumed that very little life existed in there. I have also seen kingfishes, and whilst I do realise that the existence of fish eating birds indicates life in the water, I had assumed that these kingfishes were feeding from the adjacent canal as do the herons. Amazing

Hi Mel

Thanks for that report its interesting how things are improving, hopefully in years to come the Erewash could be a healthy mixed fishery with both game and coarse fish thriving and your sighting may not be so rare. We are currently checking tribs for future spawning streams, in fact I checked out Bailey Brook this week and although dissapointing in habitat/condition, i always try to see a little potential. Please try to carry a camera as we would love any wildlife pics you come accross, either by email to info@rivererewashfoundation.co.uk or place on site yourself but use photobucket to make things easy.

This week members have spotted many birds along the Erewash corridor such has Greater Spotted Woodpecker, Hobbies (pair), Little Egret and of course with plenty of food becoming available a good number of Gooseander.
